Why you can’t seem to unwind and ‘just relax’ doesn’t ever work.
Relaxation isn't a decision made in the thinking mind — it's a state the nervous system has to feel safe enough to enter. You cannot think your way into a body that trusts its environment again. The invitation has to happen somewhere deeper than thought.
You make it to bed at the end of the day but your body doesn't get the message that it’s time torest. Your shoulders stay up near your ears. Your jaw stays tight. Your mind keeps scanning, for what, you're not always sure. Even on holiday, even when nothing is technically wrong, something in you won't power down.
If this sounds familiar, you're not doing anything wrong. And you're certainly not alone. This is one of the most common patterns the Spinal Flow Technique™ works with — a nervous system that has learned, over months or years, to live in a low hum of alert. The body isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do. Except, now, it's just doing it all the time.
The Body's Alarm System That Never Turns Off
Every nervous system comes equipped with a survival response — the familiar "fight or flight" reaction that floods the body with alertness the moment danger appears. It's a brilliant system when danger is real and temporary: a car swerves, your heart races, you react and afterward your body settles back down.
The trouble is, this alarm system doesn't distinguish well between a genuine emergency and the slow-drip stress of modern life — a demanding job, a never-ending list of ‘to do’s’, a difficult relationship, financial pressure, constant notifications, years of simply pushing through. When stress doesn't resolve, the alarm doesn't resolve either. It just stays on, quietly, in the background, shaping posture, breath, sleep and mood, without you ever consciously choosing it.
Why "Just Relax" Doesn't Work
This is why telling an overstressed body to "just relax" so rarely works. Relaxation isn't a decision made in the thinking mind — it's a state that the nervous system has to feel safe enough to enter. You cannot think your way into a body that trusts its environment again. The invitation has to happen somewhere deeper than thought.
This is also why bubble baths, holidays and even a good night's sleep often aren't enough on their own. They can offer temporary relief, but if the underlying alarm pattern hasn't shifted, the body simply returns to alert the moment ordinary life resumes.
The Base Gateway — Where Safety Lives in the Spine
In the Spinal Flow Technique, this survival pattern is closely connected with a blockage in the Base Gateway, located at the coccyx and tailbone. The Base Gateway is where the body's earliest sense of safety and groundedness is held. When physical, emotional, or chemical stress accumulates over time, it's common for blockages to form here; subtle areas where cerebrospinal fluid and Life Force Energy can no longer move as freely as they should. (Think of a garden hose that has a foot on it somewhere - the flow may happen but it’s not free or forceful).
When the Base Gateway is blocked, the nervous system tends to interpret the world through a lens of threat, and thus fear, even when there's nothing threatening happening. The body stays braced. It stays ready. It stays, in a sense, unable to fully arrive in the present moment.
Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck in Survival
This pattern can show up in ways that don't always look like obvious "stress." Common signs include:
Feeling tired but wired, especially at night
Difficulty falling or staying asleep, even when exhausted
A racing heart or shallow breath with no clear trigger
Chronic lower back or hip tension
Feeling unable to sit still, or conversely, feeling frozen and unmotivated
A persistent sense that something bad is about to happen, without a clear reason why
None of these are character flaws. They are signals — the body's honest report of a nervous system that has been carrying more than it was built to carry alone, for longer than it should have had to.
What Happens When Spinal Flow Speaks to the Base Gateway
A Spinal Flow session works with this pattern directly — not by pushing the nervous system to calm down, but by gently helping it feel safe enough to make that choice on its own. Working at the access points connected to the Base Gateway, I usse light, precise touch to invite the body's innate intelligence to reconnect with its own sense of ground.
There is no manipulation, no cracking, no force involved. I’m not ‘doing’ ‘the healing’. I create the conditions for the body's own healing intelligence to take over. Many people describe feeling their breath deepen almost immediately, or they notice a subtle warmth spreading through the lower back and hips as the area begins to soften.
What to Expect in a Session
A first Spinal Flow session usually begins with simply lying comfortably, fully clothed, while the practitioner assesses the flow through the spine. Attention often settles at the base of the spine first, since this is frequently where the oldest protective patterns are held. As the access points here are gently supported, it's common to feel sensations of warmth, subtle release, or an unexpected wave of calm — sometimes accompanied by a deep, spontaneous breath.
A Body That Finally Feels Safe to Rest
You don't have to keep ‘pushing through’ in a body that won't switch off. The exhaustion of living in constant alert isn't a personal failing — it's a nervous system asking, in its own language, for a different kind of support.
If you recognise yourself in this — the racing mind at bedtime, the shoulders that never quite drop, the sense of being tired without ever truly resting, the nagging lower back soreness — as a certified Spinal Flow Practitioner, I can help your body find its way back to safety, at its own pace.
That is Healing, Your Way.
If you are literally standing in pain, wondering if there's another way, be assured, there is a gentle way to feel better.
Reach out and take the first step toward supporting your nervous system to unwind the stress it carries. I’d be honoured to help your body remember what calm feels like again.
Live a happier life by creating a healthier you
